The people who claim there is no discrimination against atheists are absolutely delusional. I have to say something about the father in the story doesn't seem right to me, but I don't disagree with any of the particular points.
That was such a sad video. I really have no words for the things that poor girl had to deal with. It's incredible to me (and not incredible in a good way) that even the adults would be so discriminatory. I mean, I know that teens can be little jerks, it just seems that adults should be a little better rounded. My best wishes go out to that girl and I hope she gets into a really great college and realizes that not everyone will treat her that way. Freakin' unbelievable.
(Sorry, Ziztur, I feel like I'm spamming your comment boards now but I can't stop!)

You're not spamming at all! If you have something interesting to say, you could say it on every blog post and I would be perfectly happy.
I was curious as to how Nicole faired since the 20/20 episode, and so I looked her up.

While she does not give details other than her atheist focused-ness on her myspace, she and her father have another video up -all him rambling. I do hope that she has gotten a scholarship so she can go to college.
I never found out how it was to be an atheist in a small-town school, but I can tell you what it was like to bring a copy of the satanic bible to one, lol.
This video has so many faults. Atheism is a religion within itself, the belief to belive in nothing. A vast majority of the problems that this family had was because they moved to a small town, which usually have stronger religious views. Did this girl have any problems with her beliefs before she moved to that town? I have been a Christian all my life, and never have i, or anyone else that i know, ever discriminated against another person who was an atheist. What the Bible teaches us is to love one another, the golden rule, and other such ideals that we live by. We are never taught to hate a person because they are different then us. It seems like atheism has caused more problems to the Christian religion by taking the 10 Commandments off of federal land, 10 basic rules that we are all taught to follow in one way or another, Christian or not. Hopefully, God will help ease this young woman's heart and help her with her problems. I will be praying for her and her family
Nate, If atheism is a religion, tell me where we go to get our tax exempt status. I know I'd like to claim all the income I made in the name of no god.
If the ten commandments were actually made federal law we'd be stoning quite a lot of shopkeepers come Sunday. We do not need these or the bible to have morals. Asian civilizations have had morals and ideals for thousands of years without the bible's influence.
It's sad to hear that you will be doing nothing (praying) to help this girl.
Atheism is a lack of theism, or a lack of belief in God. If you want to argue that atheism is a religion, please provide for us a clear definition of what you mean by "religion" and then explain why you think atheism fits this definition.
I think it's very likely that you may have discriminated against atheists without realizing it - a lot of Christians discriminate but do not see their actions as discriminatory.
The Bible teaches people a lot of things - and the bible often tells people to hate those who are different. Have you been to http://www.evilbible.com/ ? It seems to me that killing people is an act of hate, but it is always justified as "not hate" somehow, as if insisting that you don't hate someone while beating them to death somehow means you're beating them with love.
I also fail to see how the ten commandments are important rules, especially for nonbelievers. I have no moral imperative to 1)recognize your god 2) have no other gods but yours before me 3) make an idol 4) use your god's name in a "wrong" way. 5)keep the sabbath holy (I am forced to recognize your sabbath day by being unable to buy stamps or a car on Sunday) 6) honor mum and dad (a good idea, but should not be a federal law) 6) murder - yes, this is a good one. I do have a moral imperative not to do this. 7) commit adultery (a good idea but shouldn't be a law) 8) steal (okay, this is a good one too) 10) covet things that are not mine (thoughtcrime?)
If I am NOT a Christian, then your ten commandments are not rules I should follow, and imposing those rules federally would turn this country into a theocracy.
"the belief to belive in nothing"
lol. what an idiot. why debate these people.
@ Nate:
First and foremost, I want to thank you for your wishes that Nicole's heart would be eased and comforted (even though, as Dave says, it would be nice if you actually accomplished something, instead of just praying). Of course, we still disagree, but I do want to mention that it seems like your heart is in the right place, even if I think you're mistaken.
Ziztur hit the part about atheism being a lack of religion, not a religion itself, and the bit about the Ten Commandments, so I'll throw out my two cents concerning this part:
"A vast majority of the problems that this family had was because they moved to a small town, which usually have stronger religious views. Did this girl have any problems with her beliefs before she moved to that town?"
And then immediately follows that with this:
"I have been a Christian all my life, and never have i, or anyone else that i know, ever discriminated against another person who was an atheist."
Nate, you acknowledge that her problem was that she moved to a small town, because that small town would be more religious, and then go on to say that Christians don't discriminate? Really? Are you sure you don't want to rethink these objections?
As Ziztur said, it's amazing to me that you can claim that Christians don't discriminate, and that it's actually atheists who discriminate by not allowing you to use taxpayer dollars to teach and/or enforce the Ten Commandments, laws of your particular religion, to all citizens. I mean, really, think about this. The Ten Commandments are specific to your religious beliefs. That should be obvious considering that fully half of them (depending on how you count them) specify how people should worship Yahweh. You are saying that the federal government should post and/or teach these religious laws, and if someone who isn't a member of your religion resists this, it is they who are being discriminatory? WTF?!
